The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum – English

INTENT

At Holme upon Spalding Moor Primary School, English and the teaching of English is the foundation of our engaging curriculum. Our main aim is to ensure that every single child becomes literate and progresses in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. English at Holme upon Spalding Moor is not only a daily lesson, but is one of the foundations of the entire curriculum. It is embedded within all our lessons and we strive for a high level of English for all. Through using high-quality texts, immersing children in a vocabulary-rich learning environment and ensuring that a progression of skills are met, the children at Holme upon Spalding Moor are exposed to a creative and continuous English curriculum. This not only enables them to become confident readers but also develops within them a love of reading, creative writing and purposeful speaking and listening.

IMPLEMENTATION

In order to achieve our reading aims, we will:

· Ensure reading comprehension skills are not only taught explicitly throughout the week, in discreet sessions, but also through our focused English text in class.

· Teach phonics using the approved Twinkl phonics scheme, in phonic-phased groups, daily in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 and ensure children are continuously assessed to make sure that progress is being made and that timely intervention is offered for children who need additional phonic support.

· Identify vulnerable children throughout the school and create ‘Priority Reader’ lists to ensure individual needs are met.

· Make sure time is given so that children have time to read with class teachers, teaching assistants or STAR readers (who volunteer at the school) to help build confidence, fluency and understanding.

· Celebrate reading at Holme upon Spalding Moor when a child regularly reads at home and present certificates when children visit the Mobile Library Service in the village.

· Endeavour to ensure each classroom (space dependent) has their own reading area which further engages children to read independently.

· Make sure the school offers a range of new titles through the East Riding School’s Library Service.

· Ensure the importance of reading is enhanced through World Book Day, Scholastic Book Fairs, Reading Challenges, Assemblies and interaction with authors.

In order to achieve our writing aims, we will:

· Ensure that the teaching of writing is purposeful, robust and shows clear progression for all children.

· Make sure that each year group is taught the explicit grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives required for that age group.

· Embed the skills throughout the year in cross-curricular writing opportunities.

· Teach writing through the use of a quality, purposefully selected texts which exposes the children to a wide range of rich vocabulary, a range of punctuation and characterisation.

 IMPACT

The impact on our children is that they will:

· Move forward in their education with creativity and a passion for English and develop high aspirations which will travel with them and continue to grow and develop as they do.

· Have a passion for English and understand the intrinsic link between reading and writing.

· Have the knowledge and skills to be able to read widely for a range of purposes.

· Be avid readers who enjoy reading for pleasure.

· Have the knowledge and skills to be able to write successfully for a range of purposes and audiences.

· Be confident and imaginative writers who have the ability to plan, draft and edit their work.

· Enjoy sustained writing and be able to manipulate language, grammar and punctuation to create effect.

· Understand that all aspects of English are an integral part of the curriculum and therefore transfer their skills into other subjects showing consolidation of skills and a deeper understanding of how and when to use specific grammar and punctuation.
